In this talk I will:


1) explain how photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) works and why it is useful;


2) give a quick overview of the methods available to compute photon-energy dependent PE spectra starting from the calculated density of states (and wave-functions);


3) argue why and when it is necessary to go beyond the electric dipole approximation;


4) show you examples of photoionization cross-sections computed within and beyond the electric dipole approximation for several atoms and one transition metal complex.
