Licentiate: Developing and testing the LUMBA UVES stellar parameter pipeline

This licentiate thesis describes a pipeline developed within the LUMBA node in the Gaia ESO Survey for determining stellar parameters for stellar spectra observed with the spectrograph FLAMES-UVES in its ‘RED580’ setting. The pipeline is intended for use on stars with effective temperatures such that T eff /K ∈ [4000, 8000], surface gravities such that log g/dex ∈ [−0.5, 5.0] and metallicities such that [Fe/H]/dex ∈ [−5.0, 1.0].

We develop a general method for quantifying the performance of stellar parameter pipelines by testing them on spectra of stars with previously known stellar parameters. We use this method on our pipeline and find that the performance is sufficient for the pipeline to fill its function within the Gaia ESO Survey, with systematic errors in T eff below 100 K, in log g below 0.1dex and in [Fe/H] below 0.05dex for all types of star tested other than red giants.
