Seminar: The Barnett/Einstein-de Haas effects and magnetomechanical coupling in magnetic nanoparticles

The Barnett effect addresses the magnetization induced by mechanical rotation while the Einstein-de Haas effect is its reciprocal: rotation induced by magnetization. I give a brief historical overview, including a discussion of the recent observation of the nuclear Barnett effect [1], and present a simple derivation of the Barnett effect based on the conservation of energy and angular momentum. Finally, I address the magnetomechanical coupling in freely suspended single-domain magnetic nanoparticles [2].
