Seminar: Hubble Space Telescope detections of water atmospheres on Jupiter moons Ganymede and Europa

In two recently published studies, we used ultraviolet spectra and images by the Hubble Space Telescope of the two icy moons to infer the existence of H2O in their atmospheres for the first time. Previously, these UV observations had often been used to derive O2 in the atmospheres of the two moons. Now we could show that the data also contains evidence for atmospheric H2O but only near the sub-solar region. I will given an overview over the icy moon atmospheres, explain the analysis that lead to the new water detections and give a brief outlook on future observations.
