Fusion energy has the potential to become a safe and low-carbon energy source for our future societies. In recent experiments at the Joint European Torus (JET) in England, a new world record for produced fusion energy – 59 MJ produced during 5 seconds – was recently set. In this talk we will review these results and their implications for future fusion energy research. The role played by Uppsala University during these experiments will also be highlighted.
