Abstract: 

"The properties of the neutron are very favourable for studying materials relevant in the energy sector, such as batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen storage. I will introduce the relevant neutron properties and the role of average and local structure studies in this field, using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) examples from current collaborations, to highlight the complementarity and potential of neutron scattering methods.

Looking to the future, we must not overlook the increasing importance of sample environment development to expanding capabilities that large-scale neutron facilities offer. ESS in Lund is moving towards operational status and there are significant opportunities for collaboration between existing large-scale facilities, such as ISIS, FRM-II and ILL in Europe, and universities in the partner countries to ensure that ESS delivers early, world-class science. I will showcase some examples of current projects with the aim to stimulate discussion of future requirements."
