From large area surveys superluminous supernovae, with luminosities several orders of magnitude brighter than ‘normal’ supernovae, have emerged as a new interesting, but still mysterious class of supernovae. I will discuss observations of the different types and connections to progenitors and models for their extraordinary luminosity. They have also been proposed to be responsible for both massive black holes, similar to those detected by LIGO, as well as magnetars.
