Seminarium: Is the magnetic coupling in Fe/MgO an emergent phenomena?

The magnetic coupling in Fe/MgO(001) superlattices exhibits extraordinary properties: The coupling strength between the layers is found to depend on the total number of Fe layers and the temperature dependence is extremely strong. This in combination with the large difference in the temperature dependence of the coupling strength, of the outermost and the innermost layers, cannot be rationalised by standard next neighbour interactions. A possible description of the underlying mechanism of these exceptional changes will be presented and we will argue the effects can be understood as a manifestation of an emergent phenomena.
